About Me

Sunni Seated at Restaurant Table

Hi everyone,

My name is Santhosh, though I go by Sunni (like a sunny day!).  Raised by Indian parents in the U.S., you’d think I would have had a pretty parallel perspective into Indian culture vs. American culture through the years, right?

Wrong!

You see, my dad came over to Los Angeles in the early 1970s and quickly learned how much discrimination and prejudice there still was towards people of Eastern origin. He could hardly believe it was the U.S.

So when he brought my mom in tow shortly thereafter, they decided to raise my brother and I in an English-only household to help us succeed as Americans. Boy did they achieve that aim, but they also left out the rich culture, religion, and frequent rendezvous with other relatives that “normal” Indians usually enjoy.

The first time I ever went to India was at age 8, and it was the shock of a young lifetime. That tore open a whole new world for me, though it was one of massive pain and suffering since I spent the whole time sick or strained from the weather, food, water, crowding, pollution and you-name-it.

How did I cope?

I didn’t. Not well at least. It took me 12 years to gather the maturity and courage to go back in 2002 to a place that was arguably my homeland. I had just graduated from college and had high hopes for a dot-com startup I was working on.

I hatched a grand plan to go Hyderabad, hire some people and stay there for awhile to make a success of it on the cheap. Long story short, that didn’t pan out whatsoever, but it was another great marker of maturity to show me how much I still had to learn.

Fast forward to 2008, and I’m now I’m wearing kurtas, watching Bollywood films weekly, and even saying stuff like He Bhagwaan! I credit that last one and the Hindi I’m now learning both to my brilliant and kind teacher, Anshu Jain, and a wonderful practice partner I have in Jaipur.

As enlightening and mind-expanding as I’ve found the whole Indo-American dichotomy, I’ve found it equally hilarious. Hence the inspiration for some good old Desi humor to get you going again when you need it most.  Do forgive me if I ever fail to cheer you up though.  I will simply do my best and see where that takes us together.

Oh, one other thing…

This is my first-ever blog, so please do post some feedback on my Desi jokes.  I’d very much appreciate knowing how I can make you smile and laugh even more.  Yeah, some of my jokes are dumb (hey, that’s me), but it’s all good if it makes you crack a grin, right?

Thank you for checking out my Desi jokes.

Sincerely,

Sunni

P.S. Please also feel free to email me.
